Spring cleaning: bicycle and bag ready for the new season

With the spring in the air, it’s time to get your bike ready again for a new season full of beautiful and enjoyable bike rides. Especially now that e-bikes are so popular, people are making longer rides more often. A proper maintenance is essential for years of enjoyment of your bike and its accessories. We give tips for servicing and an old-fashioned good spring clean for the new cycling season. Spring-ready to start!

Clean your bike thoroughly at least twice a year and take care of maintenance in time, such as replacing brakes and bike lights. This will not only optimise its lifespan, but also ensure your own safety on the road.

Cleaning: First round

It is most convenient to have a cloth, sponge and toothbrush nearby. Make sure you always carry a dry cloth.

Wipe the bike with the dry cloth first to remove most of the dirt. This will prevent you from making mud by brushing directly with water. Next, use an old toothbrush or other small brush to clean the hard-to-reach areas, such as the spokes and around the lights.

Also clean the panniers with a dry cloth and check that all fasteners and straps still work properly. Never wash a pannier in the washing machine, regardless of the material, as not all parts of the bicycle bag can withstand this.

The big cleanup

Always proceed with cleaning supplies, degreasers and greasers available at your local bike shop.

Read the description of the purchased product(s) and start with the frame, handlebars and saddle, in short: the parts that are easiest to clean. Also make sure to carefully remove the lights.
Be careful not to spray down your bike/accessories with a pressure washer.

The bike chain and gears can be very greasy, it is important to wipe them thoroughly with a good degreaser and then take care of them with the right lubricant.

It is important to always smear them back with special chain oil. Be economical with this, as too much grease will attract dirt. To protect your hands, it is wise to wear cleaning gloves.

Then make a new, clean lather and carefully wipe the panniers with a sponge or cloth. After cleaning, leave the bicycle bags open to dry thoroughly, preferably in a well-ventilated area or in the shade.

Vehicle inspection at your local dealer

Want to get on your bike completely worry-free this season? Then head to the bike shop and have your bike and accessories thoroughly checked. That way, you can be sure that everything is back in good condition and that you can get on your bike safely. Looking for a shop near you? Use our search tool to find a shop near you.

With a well-maintained bike, you will not only enjoy more comfortable and safer rides, but also prolong the life of your bike and panniers. Let the cycling season begin again!
